Spay Neuter Clinic Of The Carolinas

UPDATE: The clinic has replied, saying that their standard recommendations for stray cats is to stay in their original crate however, they did not make any of these recommendations to me and this was the point of my review. Additionally, the Cat was clearly having this reaction before I even left the clinic. So I am not reporting the reaction itself. I am reporting the absence of communication and absence of patient education which should be provided in general to ALL patients, especially if they are already exhibiting the symptoms before they even leave the clinic. I am very disappointed in this response because it Seems they are not accepting any accountability for not recognizing the cat had these symptoms while she was still at the clinic when I myself recognized the unusual behavior prior to leaving, and for not providing adverse reaction education to us and all animals as they say they do in this reply. That was the entire point of my review.* I took my new stray cat to get spayed. Everything seemed to go smoothly from scheduling and dropping her off. When I came to pick her up, they handed me the crate she was jumping around which surprised me. I’ve had many cats spayed and they all were more sedated or lethargic when I picked them up. The tech just smiled and said “oh yes, she’s awake.” They advised me to take her home and put her in a quiet dark room. I did this and she began running around the room frantically and ramming her head into walls, the bed frame, and other hard objects. It was very frightening. It was extremely difficult to get control of her to get her into a metal cage, which I had to do in order to protect her from harming herself. I was so afraid she was also gonna burst her incision. Once in the cage, she began bobbing and ramming her head into the sides of the metal crate. It was horrible. I looked it up online and found out that it’s not uncommon for cats to experience what is called Emergence Delirium, kind of like a “bad trip,“ when they come out of anesthesia and it usually passes within 24 hours. I followed the online instructions which were to pad the inner sides of the crate for protection and cover the crate so its completely dark. This did calm her some and I left her like this checking on her frequently overnight. What is highly concerning is that it was very clear that my cat was already having this adverse reaction, the Emergence Delirium, when I picked her up as she was jumping & bobbing around in the crate, I just did not understand it or realize there was a problem since the tech seemed unconcerned. Since this is apparently not uncommon for small animals, you would think that the technicians would recognize the obvious symptoms and instruct you on the condition & appropriate interventions as this was very frightening. I would have never let her loose in the room if I had known she was going to go wild and start ramming her head spastically. I’ve attached a picture of the discharge instructions here and they have highlighted that there should be no running, jumping, or other strenuous activity - my cat was berserk & uncontrollable. And there is no instruction or warning about adverse reactions such as she had. As a nurse practitioner, I know full well that patient education is paramount. After this experience & looking at other reviews, I don’t think we’ll be coming back here.
